Green & Gorgeous tips of the month, looking or new ways to make your garden blossom all year round? Here you’ll find some of our bests tips for your garden.

October 2014

October is a busy month in the garden. Many perennials are now looking past their best, and it’s a great time to start cutting back and composting the cuttings whilst the weather is still good (or not!). There is still time to order and plant autumn onions, shallots and garlic to get an early march on harvest times next year.

Step back and take a good look at your garden at this time of year. Did it reach its potential? Now is the time to move that plant that was just not quite in the right place, or divide some perennials to increase your stock without any financial outlay! The soil is still warm, even if air temperatures are dropping so plants will still put on some root growth to get them through the winter, standing them in good stead for growing strongly when spring arrives. Many plants are available in more variety, and at less cost, during the depths of winter. It’s known as the ‘bare root season’ and many roses, trees and perennials are available at a fraction of the cost of buying potted specimens in the peak of spring or summer. Get your orders in now if you haven’t already, stocks will already be starting to dwindle. Plants may not arrive until Christmas or later, but you can look forward to their arrival as the festive season approaches.

Think about moving your less hardy plants inside, or covering them with a deep mulch of compost or bark chippings to keep them cosy over the winter. Lifing dahlias? Life’s too short – cover them well and cross your fingers is our advice. If they don’t make it then, hey, what an opportunity to try a new variety next year!

Give your lawns a break by cutting a little less often. Moss killing & gentle scarifying is somethign to consider every year to keep your lawn looking at it’s best.

There’s a lot to do, so just call in the experts from Green & Gorgeous if it all seems too much.
